GEO strategy: one tactic per source type
AIs don't cite the same types of sources equally. Each source category calls for a different approach. Here are the most effective tactics, organized by type.
Editorial sources (press, blogs, media)
Goal: Get mentioned or cited in articles that AIs use as references.
Tactics:
- Press relations -- pitch relevant angles to journalists covering your industry
- Exclusive data -- share original statistics or analyses on trends in your market
- Guest articles -- publish on high-influence specialized blogs and media outlets
- Press kit -- maintain a kit with executive bios, HD visuals, product information, and contact details
Press mentions are doubly beneficial: they influence AIs AND strengthen your authority in traditional SEO.
UGC sources (forums, reviews, social media)
Goal: Get mentioned positively in discussions and reviews that AIs cite.
Tactics:
- Reddit -- participate authentically in discussions in your industry, add value, avoid direct promotion
- YouTube -- collaborate with micro-influencers for explainers and concrete use cases
- LinkedIn -- encourage your executives and experts to publish regularly (articles, newsletters, carousels)
- Customer reviews -- solicit detailed reviews on Trustpilot, Google Reviews, G2, Capterra. Highlight your differentiators.
Never create fake reviews or artificial content. AIs are trained to detect low-quality and manipulative content.
Corporate and partner sources
Goal: Get referenced on sites whose content is cited by AIs.
Tactics:
- Integrations and partner directories -- contribute to partner directories, integration pages ("Top tools for X")
- Co-created content -- guest articles, webinars, co-marketing with partners whose content is cited
- Product showcases -- submit your solution to industry roundups and comparisons
- Affiliates -- if a partner site regularly appears in Repliq, negotiate better positioning
Check Repliq's Sources page: if a potential partner site has a high Influence Score, that's a strong signal to start a collaboration.
Reference sources (Wikipedia, directories)
Goal: Ensure your presence is complete, accurate, and worth citing.
Tactics:
- Wikipedia -- create or update your page while respecting editorial guidelines. Use the talk page to propose neutral edits. Never edit your own page directly.
- Industry directories -- submit your listing to directories in your industry
- Crunchbase, Yellow Pages, etc. -- verify that your information is up to date
- Fix errors -- any inaccurate or outdated content works against you
Institutional sources (.edu, .gov)
Goal: Gain indirect visibility through academic or official mentions.
Tactics:
- Academic research -- collaborate with researchers (case studies, datasets, conferences)
- Hackathons and student projects -- sponsor initiatives that will mention your brand
- Public data -- share datasets for public use (often cited in academic contexts)
- Official publications -- participate in consultations and publications in your sector
These mentions build long-term trust with both AIs and users -- but they take time.
Optimize your own web content
AIs draw on existing web content. The Content opportunities section of the Overview shows you the topics where AIs don't mention you yet.
- Create expert content on those topics -- blog posts, guides, FAQs
- Structure your pages with clear headings, lists, and tables (AIs favor structured formats)
- Answer the questions your customers are asking -- use a question/answer format
- Update regularly -- Perplexity and Gemini access the web in real time
Work on your sentiment
The Sentiment page shows the positive and negative themes associated with your brand. If negative themes keep recurring:
- Identify the sources associated with negative sentiment via the Sentiment Watchtower (Sources page)
- Create content that directly addresses those points
- Monitor sentiment score evolution week after week
Monitor your competitors
The Competition page shows your relative positioning:
- Identify the topics where your win rate is low -- these are your priorities
- Analyze the platforms where your competitors are better positioned
- Use the Topics x Competitors heatmap to target your efforts
Impact timelines by platform
AI visibility improvements take time. Each platform has its own pace:
| Platform | Impact timeline | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Perplexity | 1-2 weeks | Real-time web search on every query |
| Gemini | 1-2 weeks | Integrates Google Search in real time |
| Grok | 1-4 weeks | Real-time data via X, training data for everything else |
| ChatGPT | Several months | Depends on training data updates |
| Claude | Several months | Depends on training data updates |
Not seeing results right away? That's normal. Most actions take weeks or months to show up in AI responses. Stay consistent and track your metrics on the Trends tab of the Overview.
